A saintly man lived as a solitary in his hermitage. He took abode in solitude in a house of God that was dying of waste and negligence. It was a life of extreme austerity and total dedication / intense; singular devotion to God.
عـاش رجـل ورع مـتـوحـداً فـي ديـره. أقـام فـي عـزلـة فـي بـيـت الـلـه الـذي كـان يـنـهـار نـتـيـجـة الـضـيـاع و الإهـمـال. كـانـت حـيـاة تـقـشـف مـفـرط و تـكـريـس تـام/ تـفـان شـديـد و اسـتـثـنـائـيّ مـن أجـل الـرب.
God conferred upon him numerous favours in the supernatural order, such as those of prophecy and miracles. He possessed the gift of contacting/ raising the dead (to life), encountering and driving out/ exorcising evil spirits and above all reading the mind.
أنـعـم عـلـيـه الـلـه بـعـدة امـتـيـازات مـن الـنـوع الـفـوطـبـيـعـيّ مـثـل الـنـبـوءة و الـمـعـجـزات. وكـان يـمـتـلـك مَـوْهـبـة الاتـصـال بـ/ إحـيـاء الـمـوتـى، و مـلاقـاة الأرواح الـشـريـرة و طـردهـا، و فـوق كـل هـذا قـراءة الأفـكـار.
As a wonderworker and faith healer, he had the ability to cure illnesses with the power of the mind and other miraculous healing powers to relieve people in distress.
كـانـت لـديـه، بـمـا هـو صـانـع مـعـجـزات و راق، الـقـدرة علـى شـفـاء الأمـراض بـقـوة الـعـقـل و قـدرات اسـتـشـفـائـيـة أخـرى لـتـخـفـيـف مـحـن الـنـاس.
Born of a noble family, his charity to the poor knew no bounds. Well-versed in the Scriptures, he held synods of the clergy semi-annually to instil in the hearts of his companions/ subjects the double spirit of contemplation and penance. The depth of his theological knowledge and the vastness of his eloquence made him one of the most respected religious figures in/ the region. He also did pastoral and missionary work among the neglected people by translating the Bible into vernacular languages for the indigenous peoples and encouraged lay learning for the unlettered. By dint of hard and unremitting labour, the holy missionary erected/ established parishes and succeeded in converting numerous sinners of the staunchest kind. He performed his apostolic functions to raise the people’s spirit and improve the lot of the lowly. In his ever-active quest, he laboured zealously to eradicate the vice of simony and stamp out/ eliminate for good the remaining vestiges of idolatry and abomination. He preached the Gospel among the heretic and extirpated the last vestiges of paganism that had sprouted among his people. He extended his zeal wherever the honour of God seemed to require it. This towering figure was a source of wise counsel, and people followed after his example/ they modelled their lives after that of his/ they heeded his example/ they did things by his example.
ولـد لـعـائـلـة نـبـيـلـة، ولـم يـكـن لـصـنـيـعـه الـخـيـريّ أي حـدود. مـلـمـاً بـالـكـتـاب الـمـقـدس، أقـام مـجـالـس كـَنـَسـيّـة لـرجـال الـديـن عـنـد كـل مـنـتـصـف سـنـة لـيـغـرس فـي قـلـوب رفـاقـه/ رعـايـاه الـروح الـمـزدوجـة لـلـتـأمـل و الـكـفـّـارة. وقـد جـعـلـه عـمـق مـعـرفـتـه الـلاهـوتـيـة و رحـابـة مـدى فـصـاحـتـه واحـداً مـن الـشـخـصـيـات الـديـنـيـة الأكـثـر تـقـديـراً فـي الـمـنـطـقـة. أيـضـاً فـقـد قـام بـالـعـمـل الـرّعـاويّ و الـتـبـشـيـريّ وسـط الـمـهـمـَّشـيـن بـتـرجـمـة الإنـجـيـل إلــى الـعـامـيـات لـفـائـدة الـسـكـان الأصـلـيـيـن، كـمـا شـجـع الـتـعـلـم الـبـسـيـط لـصـالـح الأمـيـيـن. و بـفـضـل عـمـلـه الـشـاق و الـدؤوب شـيـَّد أديـرة و نـجـح فـي هـدايـة الـعـديـد مـن الـمـذنـبـيـن الأكـثـر شـدة. لـقـد قـام بـمـهـامـه الـبـابـويـة لـلـرفـع مـن مـعـنـويـات الـنـاس و تـحـسـيـن ظـروف مـعـيـشـة الـمـسـتـضـعـفـيـن، وعـمـل بـحـمـاس، فـي سـعـيـه الـمـتـواصـل، علـى اسـتـئـصـال الـرذيـلـة و مـحـو آثـار الـوثـنـيـة و الـمـقـت الـبـاقـيـة بـشـكـل نـهـائـي لـقـد بـشـر بـالإنـجـيـل وسـط الـمـهـرطـقـيـن كـمـا اسـتـأصـل آخـر آثـار الـوثـنـيـة الـتـي نـمـت بـسـرعـة وسـط شـعـبـه، و نـشـر حـمـاسـتـه حـيـثـمـا تـطـلـَّبـهــا الـشـرف الـربـانـي. كـانـت هـذه الـشـخـصـيـة الـسـامـيـة مـنـبـع الـوعـظ الـحـكـيـم فـاقـتـدى بـهـا الـنـاس/ حـذوا حـذوهـا/ نـسـجـوا حـيـاتـهـم علـى مـنـوالـهـا/ جـعـلـوا مـنـهـا قـدوة.

إسـوة بـالـكـمـال الإنـجـيـلـي.
Being a man of vast learning and constant activity, genuine eloquence and immense charity, his reputation of sanctity spread quickly far and wide – a fact that incurred the wrath and resentment of anti-religious groups.
لـمـا كـان رجـلا واسـع الـمـعـرفـة، مـطـَّرد الـنـشـاط، أصـيـل الـفـصـاحـة، جـمَّ الإحـسـان ، فـإنَّ صـيـتـه الـقــدسـيّ ذاع بـسـرعـة طـولا وعـرضـاً، الأمـر الـذي أثـار حـنـق الـجـمـاعـات الـمـنـاهـضـة لـلـديـن و حـقـدهـا.
Works of charity for him were his overriding concern.
كـانـت الأعـمـال الـخـيـريـة بـالـنـسـبـة إلـيـه شـغـلـه الـشـاغـل.
Charity was his predominant virtue.
كـان الإحـسـان فـضـيـلـتـه الـراجـحـة.
