The passenger-car ferry which plies the busy sea-lane of Gibralter strait left the pier at Tangiers, but its hydraulically lifted bow door in front wasn’t shut firmly. After an internal flooding it started sinking stern first. Apparently, it couldn’t resist the rough waves of a hard sea. The emergency alarm/ buzzer sounded through the ship, and the passengers in their life jackets jammed on board waiting for lifeboats to be lowered. Within less than 20 minutes, the ferry rolled upside down and slid below the waves. This technical flaw in properly manipulating the vehicle-access door of the ro-ro ferry caused great damage. Among the victims were men in the prime of their life. As shocking as such a scene was, even more disturbing was the fact that bodies were seen bobbing up and down. The survivors sighted one another and closed within hailing distance. Rescuers on rafts and rubber boats plucked living people from the sea. Some of the dead were floating face down. Engineers on watch maintained that a huge leak in the engine room caused the sinking of the two-masted, 60-foot ferry. But a ship inspection agency, after gathering information from divers, uncovered the hard truth.
غـادرت عـبّـارة الـركـاب و الـسـيـارات، الـتـي تـتـردد بـاسـتـمـرار علـى الـمـمـر الـبـحـري الـنـشـيـط لـمـضـيـق/ الـطـنـان عـبـر الـسـفـيـنـة و احـتـشـد الـركـاب فـي صـدريـات الـنـجـاة علـى الـظـهـر فـي انـتـظـار إنـزال قـوارب الـنـجـاة. وفـي أقـل مـن 20 دقـيـقـة، انـقــلـبـت الـعـبّـارة رأسـاً علـى عـقـب، ثـم انـزلـقـت تـحـت الأمـواج. لـقـد تـسـبـب هـذا الـخـطـأ الـتـقـنـي الـمـتـمـثـل فـي عـدم الـتـعـامـل الـجـيـد مـع بـاب مـدخـل الـعـربـات الـخـاص بـالـعـبـّارة فـي خـسـارة فـادحـة. وكـان مـن بـيـن الـضـحـايـا رجـال فـي عـنـفـوان شـبـابـهـم. و لـمـا كـان هـذا الـمـشـهـد مـروّعـاً، فـإن مـنـظـر الأجـسـاد، الـتـي كـانـت تُـرى مـتـرجّـحـة إلـى الأعلـى و الأسـفـل، كـان أكـثـر إقـلاقـاً. و كـان الـنـاجـون يـنـظـرون إلـى بـعـضـهـم الـبـعـض و يـقـتـربـون مـن بـعـضـهـم الـبـعـض إلـى مـسـافـة تـسـمـح لـهـم بـالـمـنـاداة. كـان رجـال الانـقـاذ، علـى مـتـن رمـوثـهـم و زوارقـهـم الـمـطـاطـيـة، يـنـتـشـلـون الأحـيـاء مـن الـبـحـر، وقـد كـان بـعـض الـمـوتـى عـائـمـيـن بـوجـوه إلـى الأسـفـل. أكـد الـمـهـنـدسـون الـمـكـلـفـون بـالـمـراقـبـة أن ثـقـبـاً ضـخـمـاً فـي حـجـرة الـمـحـرّكـات هــو الـذي تـسـبـب فـي إغـراق الـعـبـّارة ثـنـائـيـةِ الـصـواري، الـبـالـغ طـولـهـا 60 قـدمـاً، لـكـن وكـالـة تـفـتـيـش الـسـفـن كـشـفـت، بـعـد جـمـعـهـا مـعـلـومـات مـن الـغـواصـيـن، عـن الـحـقـيـقـة الـمـرَّة.
