- a. Communication satellites carry phone calls, relay breaking news to newspapers, and carry live action shows to TV stations. They inundate the airwaves with thousands of hours of programs daily. b. Data-tracking satellites receive information from low-orbit satellites and relay it back to Earth stations/ground points. Data gleaned by Earth-circling and interplanetary probes. The double-duty probe, which could be annihilated by cometary debris, was redirected for a new mission (= re-targeting) through interplanetary space. c. Earth resources satellites help find oil and locate water sources. d. Weather satellites help us in search-and-rescue missions/locate sunken ships and drowned planes. e. Navigation satellites can identify our position exactly. f. Military/ early-warning satellites keep up with troop and missile movements and monitor nuclear weapon developments. g. Space research satellites explore our galaxy and beyond. They look out into space to find out the mysteries of the universe.
