Russian cosmonauts battled for months, through a string of hair-raising mishaps to keep a crippled space station in orbit. The crew’s spacewalk was designed not only to restore the spacelab’s orientation (orientation engines can keep the complex aligned toward the sun but they are not rechargeable and need to be replaced when fuel runs out), but also to fix a leaky hatch cosmonauts use to exit Mir on spacewalks. A computer failure caused the station to lose its orientation to the sun, which it needs to keep its solar batteries working effectively. The whole station was at times tumbling out of its proper alignment with much of its power supply and computer control system out of action. One of its sections, namely the hull, was punctured (a punctured hull) in a collision with an unmanned ship. The collision damage occurred when a cargo ship (un)docked (from) the Mir.
