The speed and power of the Internet as a communications network mean that sports fans everywhere will have a direct link into official Olympic results system. Seconds after an event has finished, information will be relayed to the Olympic home page, providing the most ambitious sporting public access hot-line in the world. If you can’t be there, it’s the next best thing.
From their commentary positions, broadcasters have touch-sensitive interactive access to all the results and scores as they happen, as well as biographical information on each of the numerous competitors. Fingertip control like this means that as soon as something happens, it will be known all over the world.
Just as sporting performance has improved, often to heights once thought to be physically impossible, so too has technology developed. With the touch of a finger to a screen, fans can access live shots from 10 camera angles, call up stats, or fetch an instant replay.
IBM has built a system that tracks and records all sporting performances. It has the benefit of being flexible enough to accommodate the four different sporting categories – timed , judged, head-to-head and team – yet robust enough to cope with the rigours of intense competition.

The Olympic Games Committee, in association with IBM and other sponsors, has developed a system that provides a quick and accurate process for registering, authenticating, and badging people.

A RailCam follows sprinters; a MobyCam, which crawls along the pool floor during swim events, tracks swimmers; and a DiveCam plummets alongside platform divers, tracking them into the water.
Athletes no longer have to rely on the fallible hand-and-eye judgement of human officials to decide their fate. As the Olympic Games move into the 21st century, sporting achievement and information technology are set to reach new peaks of performance.
