الـمَـكـَّاك ذو الـذيـل الـشـبـيـه بـذيـل الأسـد.
The lion is the king of the jungle. It is a man-eating animal. While it is on a kill, the lioness stays with the cubs. A hungry lion goes straight at its prey. With exposed claws protruding from the forepaws, the predator would suddenly pounce on its prey, going for the throat (a neck bite strangles the prey). A pride of lions can be seen resting in the shade of a tree/ in the high grass, sunning themselves after filling their stomach with the flesh of a fatally wounded beast. The sky above them would blacken with clear-eyed vultures feasting on the remains of the victims. To feed the cubs, the lioness feeds them with her teats heavy with milk or eats the food herself and then brings it up again. When the lioness’s cubs become full-grown lions of the pride they gradually (= by degrees) indulge in full sex after a carefully-planned programme of cuddling, touching and petting. The lioness mates with a partner once being ready for sex.

The resident gazelle is long-legged and slender-bodied with slightly out-turned horns.

The dorcas gazelle still lives among the foot-hills but is more common in the remote stony desert and is a well adapted arid-dweller able to survive without drinking freshwater. If disturbed, it may be seen to spring up from behind a bush/ sand dune, and make its getaway in graceful leaps which develop into flat-out gallop if pursued. Gazelles are quite territorial and live in herds (of up to seven), normally consisting of one male, and several females with their young/ junior adults staying close within the herd. The territory is marked with strategically deposited faeces, and with a scent excreted from glands just beneath the eyes smeared on bushes, branches, and even stones by a rubbing motion of the head.
